Bear bridges on new highway
A new 156km motorway connecting Sofia to the border with Greece is to feature bridges to enable bears to cross.
Although rare, bears can be found in the Rila, Pirin and Stara Planina mountains. They have even been seen on Vitosha close to Sofia.
Environmentalists want to be sure that they are able to cross freely from one mountain to another, and from Bulgaria to Greece.
The bears shunned the tunnels incorporated into an earlier road project. This time they get their own bridges.
