Protecting Parvomayska Lyutenitsa

Parvomayska Lyutenitsa - a traditional local relish of tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, onion and spices - has been protected by the European Union.

It has been added to the EU’s Register of Protected Geographical Indications which covers agricultural products and foodstuffs closely linked to a specific geographical area.

Other such protected foods are Gruyère cheese (France) and Darjeeling tea (India).

As Novinite explains: “From now on, the Lyutenitsa Parvomay product will be only allowed to be manufactured in the southern Bulgarian town of Parvomay” - where one factory has been producing it for 60 years.
