European Health Insurance Card in Bulgaria
On its Facebook page, the British Embassy in Sofia has reminded holders of European Health Insurance Cards (or EHIC) about their rights in Bulgaria and elsewhere.
“Everyone should have confidence when travelling in Europe that they will have access to the healthcare they are entitled to. The EHIC means having access to all medically-necessary care in a state hospital on the same basis as a national of that country. People have the right to insist their EHIC is accepted.
“We also recommend that individuals take out comprehensive travel insurance as the EHIC does not cover every eventuality, such as repatriation in the event of a medical emergency.”
On its Twitter feed, the British Embassy advises: “In hospital in Bulgaria, never sign a disclaimer; you cannot forfeit the right to be treated under the EHIC.”
