Tourism in Bulgaria
Bulgaria’s announcement of a new brand strategy to promote tourism prompted us to look at how important this sector is to the country’s economy.
Already tourism is responsible for 3.3% of employment and generates 3.6% of Bulgaria’s GDP.
If you add in the ‘indirect’ contribution, economists say tourism’s total impact is considerably higher.
According to the World Tourism Organization, in 2008 Bulgaria received 8.9 million tourists. Guests from three countries - Greece, Romania and Turkey - accounted for 40% of visitors.
New types of tourism, including cultural, architectural and historic tours, eco-tourism, pilgrimage tourism, and adventure tours are expanding Bulgaria's portfolio.
The government hopes that the new branding will increase visitor numbers by 25% in five years.
