Could Putin be of Bulgarian origin?
A researcher claims that Russia's President Putin has Bulgarian origins. Dobrinka Raychinova says she has traced Putin's ancestors to Chiprovtsi in Northwestern Bulgaria in the 17th century.
Raychinova, who is a professor at Sofia University "St. Kliment Orhidski", has been working on Vladimir Putin's genealogy.
Her theory is that after the Chiprovtsi uprising against the Ottoman Empire in 1688, a boy from a local family with the surname Putin – his great-great-grandfather - fled to St. Petersburg, where he married a Russian woman, and started Vladimir Putin's family.
