Rose oil goes private
Bulgaria’s cabinet has been busy privatizing various state-owned companies including weapons manufacturer VMZ and tobacco producer Bulgartabak.
But surely the most exotic will be the auction of ‘State Laboratory Balgarska Roza’, the official regulator of rose oil production in Bulgaria.
Rose oil has been produced in the Valley of Roses at the heart of Bulgaria since the seventeenth century. Harvesting the flowers is still done by hand in the morning before sunrise. The oil is distilled the same day.
Today Bulgaria is the source of over 80% of the world’s rose oil.
