Chinese start car production in Bulgaria

Great Wall Motors launched operations in Bulgaria yesterday, becoming the first Chinese car manufacturer to assemble cars in the European Union.

With an initial production of 2,000 cars a year, the company intends production to rise to 50,000 annually by 2014.

As Bulgaria is a member of the European Union, the project provides Great Wall with access to other EU countries without having to pay import tariffs.

�In the long term we hope that our cars made in Bulgaria can reach the European market,� said Great Wall�s president and CEO. �Stepping on the European market is our strategy.�

Google Streetview for Sofia

Google cars with their roof-mounted cameras will soon be seen travelling the streets of Sofia and other major cities capturing the images required to create Google Street View for Bulgaria.

Google Street View, which offers panoramic views from a particular spot alongside a street, can be used both through Google Maps and Google Earth.

It was launched in 2007, originally only in several cities in the United States, and has since expanded to include hundreds of cities and rural areas worldwide.

According to Sofia Echo the cars� destinations will include Sofia, Varna and Plovdiv, as well as about 70 Bulgarian towns.

Bulgarian wine exports grow

Wine production in Bulgaria, which has a long history dating back to the times of the Thracians, is becoming increasingly important for the economy.

Today there are more than 80 commercial vineyards. UK, Romania, Poland, and Russia are the top export markets.

Standards are rising fast: Bulgarian wines are performing well in international competitions, and wine exports rose by 1.9% to 58.5 million litres in 2011.

Alpine Skiing World Cup at Bansko

Bansko is about to host a round of the Alpine Skiing World Cup. This weekend the men's giant slalom and slalom take place; next weekend it's the women's downhill and supergiant slalom.

In the last 4 years over �40 million has been invested in the ski resort, making it the fastest developing winter-sports centre in eastern Europe. The ski area above Bansko now has over 70 kilometres of ski runs.

According to the press, a 40-man special alpine unit of the Bulgarian Army has arrived in Bansko to assist with preparations.

Charity pub quiz in aid of Cedar Foundation

The next Pub Quiz in aid of Cedar Foundation is at 7.00pm on 29th of February 2012 at JJ Murphy's on 6 Karnigradska Street, sponsored by Cleves and The Hilton Foundation.

Teams of 5 or 6 people can enter, and the fee is 100 BGN per team. JJ Murphy�s will provide snacks, and the first prize is dinner for the winners at a smart Sofia restaurant. There�s also a raffle with wonderful prizes.

All proceeds will go to support Cedar Foundation�s work to improve the quality of life of children and young people with intellectual disabilities in Bulgaria.
